GLASGOW, Mont. – The plains of northeast Montana will roar to life today under strong winds and an approaching early-winter system that promises the first taste of November chill. Skies start clear and calm, but a quick change is on the way — with gusty crosswinds and the potential for light snow by Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, a Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect until late tonight, with gusts near 45 mph creating rough conditions on Fort Peck Lake and across open highways like U.S. 2 and Montana Highway 24. The stiff westerlies will usher in a colder air mass late Friday as a Pacific front moves through. Light rain will begin during the day, changing to a mix of rain and snow by nightfall.

Forecasters expect minimal accumulation — generally less than an inch — but falling temperatures and blustery northwest winds could make for slick rural roads and low visibility. Highs will tumble from the lower 60s today to near 50°F Friday and just the upper 30s Saturday.

Travelers and truckers should plan for sudden crosswinds and colder pavement conditions late Friday. Those attending outdoor school games or early Veterans Day events this weekend should layer up against the brisk wind and chilly air.

By Sunday, sunshine returns but highs linger in the low 40s, with frosty mornings likely into early next week. Long-range models hint that this is only a preview — colder air and additional snow chances may build closer to Thanksgiving across the northern Plains.
