GLASGOW, MT — A strong winter system is barreling toward northeast Montana, threatening to bury parts of the region under 4 to 7 inches of snow by late Friday night. The National Weather Service in Glasgow has extended its Winter Storm Watch, warning travelers to prepare for hazardous conditions and potential travel delays through Friday evening.
Snow is expected to begin spreading into the area Thursday afternoon, intensifying by Thursday night and continuing steadily through Friday. Heaviest totals are likely across Phillips, Valley, Roosevelt, Richland, and Dawson counties, including the cities of Glasgow, Wolf Point, Sidney, and Malta.
Forecasters say visibility could drop quickly as gusty north winds blow across open fields, creating whiteout conditions at times. Road crews are already preparing for slick, snow-covered highways, especially along U.S. Highway 2 and routes near Fort Peck and Circle.
Temperatures will stay cold — generally in the 20s to near 30°F — ensuring that snow accumulates easily on all surfaces. Wind chills may fall into the single digits, making travel even more challenging for those returning from the holiday.
Residents are urged to delay unnecessary travel, keep emergency kits and blankets in their vehicles, and monitor updates as watches are likely upgraded to Winter Storm Warnings by late Thursday.
