Missoula, Mont. – Heavy, wet snow is expected to hit Glacier National Park this weekend, with travel across Going-to-the-Sun Road and Marias Pass potentially becoming hazardous by Saturday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Missoula and Great Falls, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning, with up to 12 inches of snow possible above 6,000 feet and gusts up to 40 mph. Elevations as low as 4,000 feet could see 4 inches, with both east and west Glacier regions affected.
Slushy snow may create dangerous conditions on US Highway 89, Looking Glass Road, and backcountry trails near Logan Pass, Saint Mary, and Babb. The storm’s timing could severely impact weekend recreation. Officials warn of possible power outages from falling trees and advise avoiding high-elevation travel.
Visitors planning to hike or camp in Flathead National Forest or remote sections of the park should reconsider their plans or be prepared for winter conditions.
The storm is expected to taper off by midday Sunday, but additional warnings may be issued.
