Billings, Montana – Winter is making a surprise return to Montana this week as up to 6 inches of snow is expected to blanket the Beartooth Highway through Wednesday morning, with mountain peaks potentially seeing as much as 8 inches.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, accumulating snow will fall over the Beartooth Mountains beginning Monday morning and continue intermittently into early Wednesday. Snow levels are forecast to drop to 7,500 feet, affecting the higher elevations of the scenic Beartooth Highway, including Beartooth Pass Summit (10,947 ft) and Vista Point (9,200 ft).

Travelers should prepare for slick roads, limited visibility, and winter-like driving conditions along U.S. Highway 212. Officials advise against non-essential travel through the high mountain corridor until conditions improve. No snow accumulation is expected below 7,500 feet, but chain requirements or temporary road closures may be enforced at higher elevations.

This rare early June snowfall underscores Montana’s unpredictable mountain weather and could mark one of the colder starts to summer travel season in the region. Drivers are urged to carry extra supplies, winter gear, and check MDT updates before traveling.

Snow impacts are expected to last through early Wednesday. Further advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
