Billings, MT – A spring storm system is sweeping across Montana, bringing a mix of wet snow and cold rain that’s expected to last through early Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, the storm began impacting the region early Wednesday and is forecast to bring widespread precipitation and falling temperatures. Red Lodge may see the highest totals, with 12 to 18 inches of snow expected, while Livingston and Neihart could receive between 4 and 6 inches. Billings, Columbus, and Cody are projected to receive 2 to 3 inches of snow.
Lower elevations will experience rain initially, with a transition to wet snow expected overnight Wednesday. Forecasters warn that snow accumulations will vary significantly by elevation and encourage residents to monitor updated forecasts.
Travel and outdoor activity will likely be disrupted due to slick roads, limited visibility, and freezing conditions. The storm also poses risks to young livestock, especially in rural and exposed areas.
Drivers are urged to use caution and call 511 for real-time road conditions. Residents should prepare for possible delays and protect vulnerable animals and equipment as the system continues into Friday morning.
