Great Falls, MT – A significant winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow to Montana’s Little Belt and Highwood Mountains beginning Friday evening and continuing through late Saturday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Great Falls, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for mountain areas including Monarch, Kings Hill Pass, and Neihart. Forecasters say total snow accumulations could range from 6 to 10 inches, with peak areas possibly seeing up to 12 inches by the end of the event.

Travel through mountain passes like Kings Hill Pass may be hazardous. Tire chains could be required for some vehicles, especially during periods of intense snowfall. In addition to slick roads, the wet and heavy snow could cause tree limb damage and increase the risk of power disruptions in remote areas.

Residents and travelers in central Montana should monitor road conditions and postpone nonessential travel through higher elevations. The Montana Department of Transportation recommends carrying emergency supplies, checking tire chains, and allowing extra time for travel through affected corridors.

This level of snowfall is not uncommon for late March in the Little Belt Mountains, but the storm’s intensity and wet snow increase the risk of road closures and delays. Updates will follow as the system develops.
