Glasgow, MT – Montana starts Sunday under calm skies, but forecasters warn the peace will quickly give way to powerful winds and choppy water. A Lake Wind Advisory is now in effect for Fort Peck Lake from 2 p.m. Sunday through 9 p.m. Monday, with gusts strong enough to overturn small craft.
According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, winds will build rapidly this afternoon, reaching 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Boaters should avoid open water as wave heights could climb to 6 feet. The strongest conditions are expected Monday during peak afternoon hours, when westerly winds sweep across the open plains and lake basin.
Temperatures will reach the low 60s today before falling sharply Monday, when highs struggle to hit 51°F under blustery skies. Light showers could brush through central and eastern Montana before colder, drier air moves in. By Monday night, lows drop into the upper 20s — cold enough for early frost on exposed surfaces.
Travelers along U.S. Highway 2 should prepare for crosswinds, especially east of Malta and toward Wolf Point. Wind-driven dust and brief visibility drops are possible through late Monday.
By Tuesday, calmer, sunny weather returns, leading into a clear and cool midweek stretch. For now, eastern Montana faces a classic October whiplash — gusty winds, cold air, and the first hint of winter’s edge.
