Glasgow, Mont. – Wind roared across the high plains early Monday as whitecaps churned Fort Peck Lake, marking one of the gustiest days of this fall season. The National Weather Service in Glasgow has extended a Lake Wind Advisory through 9 p.m. Monday, warning of hazardous boating conditions and strong gusts up to 50 mph across central and southeast Phillips, Garfield, and Valley counties.

Winds from the northwest will remain intense through the day, keeping temperatures near 50°F but making it feel much colder. Waves up to six feet are possible on Fort Peck Lake, and smaller craft could capsize in the rough chop. Officials urge boaters and anglers to postpone lake travel until conditions ease this evening. Those traveling along U.S. Highway 2 or Montana Highway 24 should expect reduced visibility from blowing dust and stay alert for crosswinds affecting high-profile vehicles.

According to meteorologists, calmer weather returns Tuesday with lighter winds and plenty of sunshine. Highs will climb into the upper 50s to near 60°F by midweek, bringing a more typical October pattern. Clear, chilly nights will follow, with lows dipping into the 20s and low 30s — cold enough for patchy frost in sheltered valleys.

Looking ahead to the weekend, another mild ridge is expected to hold, keeping the region dry and stable through Saturday. But forecasters hint that colder, wetter systems could begin to press south from Canada next week — early signals of a broader fall-to-winter transition for northern Montana.
