Billings, Montana – Strong and gusty winds are impacting much of south-central and eastern Montana today as a cold front sweeps west to east across the region, creating difficult travel conditions and elevated grass fire concerns.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, strong winds near the mountains and western foothills will persist through the morning hours, with breezy conditions expanding eastward into the plains this afternoon. Gusts will be strongest in wind-prone areas, including along Interstate 90 and U.S. Highway 191, where high-profile vehicles may struggle to maintain control.
Communities such as Livingston, Big Timber, Red Lodge, Columbus, and Billings can expect periods of strong crosswinds, especially as the front moves through. Loose objects may be blown around, and drivers towing trailers or operating larger vehicles are urged to know their vehicle limits and use extra caution.
The combination of dry fuels and gusty winds is also raising concerns for rapid grass fire spread, particularly in open rangeland areas. Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and avoid activities that could spark fires.
Winds are expected to gradually ease later today into the evening as the front moves east of the area. While conditions improve overnight, officials stress that travel impacts and fire concerns remain elevated through much of the day. Residents should stay alert for updates as wind conditions evolve.
