GLASGOW, Mont. – Before dawn, the wind hums across the High Plains and the surface of Fort Peck Lake shimmers with whitecaps. It’s a classic early-November setup — strong westerly gusts, cool dry air, and visibility stretching for miles under a pale sky. But for boaters and residents near the water, today’s Lake Wind Advisory is serious business.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph will continue through tonight, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph. Waves on Fort Peck Lake could climb to six feet, creating hazardous conditions for small craft and any unanchored docks or water equipment. The advisory remains in effect until midnight MST.

Travelers along U.S. Highway 2 and MT-24 should expect strong crosswinds and brief bursts of blowing dust in open stretches. Light, unsecured objects could easily be tossed or damaged. Those recreating near the shoreline should stay off the water and secure boats immediately.

Conditions ease early Monday as winds weaken and temperatures moderate. Highs will hover near 50°F Monday afternoon with increasing clouds, then dip into the low 30s Monday night. Tuesday brings another brisk day under mostly cloudy skies, with highs again in the low 50s.

By midweek, calmer and slightly warmer weather returns — a brief pause before the next potential cold front later in the week. Early signs point to cooler, unsettled conditions late in the month as La Niña-driven patterns begin shaping the first true winter weather of the season across the northern plains.
