Billings, Mont. – Scattered severe thunderstorms could rattle southeast Montana and northern Wyoming late Tuesday, with strong winds and hail threatening travel and outdoor activities from 4 p.m. through midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a Level 2 out of 5 risk has been issued for areas including Broadus, Ekalaka, Baker, and extending into Gillette, Wyoming. Storms are expected to develop late this afternoon and persist into the night, bringing quarter-size hail and wind gusts up to 65 mph. A few cells could turn severe, especially after sunset.

Primary threats include isolated power outages, downed limbs, and hazardous driving conditions, particularly along U.S. Highways 212 and 59. Local emergency managers urge residents with evening plans to monitor alerts, identify shelter locations, and avoid travel during active storms.

This is the first notable severe weather threat in the region this week and follows a stretch of quiet early-summer conditions. While the storm activity will be scattered, forecasters say any isolated storm could become intense.

Warnings remain possible through midnight. Keep mobile alerts active and prepare for fast-changing weather, especially near the Montana–Wyoming border.
