Billings, Montana – Severe thunderstorms could bring large hail, tornadoes, and wind gusts over 75 mph to central and eastern Montana Friday afternoon and evening, putting cities like Billings, Great Falls, and Helena on alert for rapidly changing weather conditions.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the strongest storms are expected to develop between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. MDT, with the most significant risk centered over central Montana and stretching south into the High Plains. Some hailstones could exceed 2 inches in diameter, with isolated tornadoes possible, particularly near Bozeman and Lewistown.

Missoula and western Montana will see lower storm risks but should stay weather-aware. In contrast, enhanced risk zones near Billings, Miles City, and Sidney may experience multiple rounds of severe weather. Highway 87, I-94, and U.S. 12 could face delays or closures if conditions worsen.

Residents are urged to monitor NOAA weather radios or local media for alerts, secure loose outdoor items, and be ready to seek shelter quickly if warnings are issued. The combination of large hail and high winds poses a serious risk to both property and travel.

Severe thunderstorm warnings remain possible into Friday night, with updates expected throughout the day.
