Billings, Montana – Strong storms are set to sweep across central and southern Montana today, threatening large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain from Billings to Miles City. Afternoon and evening plans could be disrupted as the risk for scattered severe thunderstorms ramps up—some storms may reach golf ball-sized hail and 65 mph gusts.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, the highest threat window stretches from 2 to 11 p.m. Tuesday. The strongest activity is expected along a broad area from Livingston and Red Lodge through Hardin, Broadus, and Miles City, where an elevated “Level 2” risk is posted for scattered severe storms. Areas outside this main corridor, including Great Falls and Lewistown, should still stay alert for strong wind and locally heavy rain.

Motorists on I-94, US-212, and MT-59 should prepare for sudden visibility drops and ponding water. Outdoor events, including the Yellowstone County Fair, could see interruptions or dangerous conditions—move activities indoors and have multiple ways to get warnings. Residents are urged to secure loose items, charge phones, and avoid travel if severe weather warnings are issued.

This storm system marks one of the most active severe days in July for Montana, reminiscent of last summer’s late-month outbreaks. Storms will move east after sunset but warnings could extend if activity lingers.

Stay tuned for further updates as storms continue through Tuesday night.
