Billings, Mont. – Thunderstorms packing hail and damaging winds may strike eastern Montana between 3 and 9 p.m. Wednesday, prompting a Level 1 severe storm risk across the plains.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, isolated severe storms could bring quarter-sized hail and wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. Areas from Miles City to Glasgow, including Glendive, Jordan, and Sidney, fall under the threat window for this afternoon and evening.
Communities in Carter, Fallon, and Dawson counties should stay weather-aware, especially if planning outdoor activities. While storm coverage is expected to remain scattered, any cells that do form could intensify quickly. The strongest activity will likely occur during peak heating hours before tapering off later tonight.
Travelers along U.S. Highway 2 and I-94 should watch for sudden downpours and reduced visibility. Those without shelter are advised to identify safe indoor locations ahead of time. Residents should also secure loose outdoor items and have multiple ways to receive alerts.
The chance for severe weather is expected to decrease by late evening, but updates will continue as conditions evolve.
