GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Strong winds are sweeping across north-central Montana this afternoon, with gusts topping 70 mph expected to continue until 6 p.m. Monday. The National Weather Service in Great Falls warns that winds could cause power outages, blow loose debris, and make driving dangerous, especially for high-profile vehicles.
According to the NWS, the strongest winds are expected between now and 4 p.m., impacting eastern Glacier, western Toole, and central Pondera counties. Utility crews and emergency managers are on alert as scattered outages and downed branches have already been reported in some rural areas.
Drivers on U.S. Highway 2 and Interstate 15 are urged to use caution, particularly near Cut Bank and Shelby, where crosswinds could make travel treacherous. Residents are advised to secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and holiday decorations to prevent damage or injury.
Winds are expected to ease later this evening, but occasional gusts may persist into early Tuesday. Additional advisories could be issued if conditions worsen.
