Flathead County, MT – Strong northeast winds are expected to hit the Flathead and Mission Valleys Sunday evening, prompting the National Weather Service in Missoula to issue a High Wind Watch through Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, gusts could reach up to 55 mph across the eastern Flathead Valley, stretching from Lake Blaine to Swan Lake, and along Highway 35 south of Wood’s Bay to Finley Point. Winds are expected to peak overnight Sunday into early Monday.

The weather service warned that damaging winds could topple trees and power lines, potentially leading to widespread outages. Boat docks on the southwest side of Flathead Lake are particularly at risk, as lake levels remain about two feet below full pool — increasing vulnerability to wave damage. Waves are forecast to reach 3 to 5 feet on the lake’s eastern shore.

Drivers, especially those operating high-profile vehicles, may face difficult travel conditions during the storm. The NWS also noted a slight chance of wet snow accumulation near U.S. 93 northwest of Polson, which could create slick spots and localized power disruptions.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects and monitor updated forecasts as the system approaches Sunday evening.
