Billings, MT – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Billings has issued multiple Winter Weather Advisories and a Winter Storm Warning across southern and eastern Montana, with heavy snow and rapidly falling temperatures expected to make travel treacherous through Saturday morning.
The most significant impacts are expected across Treasure, Northern Rosebud, and Custer counties — including Miles City, Forsyth, and Colstrip — where a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 5 a.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday. These areas could see 5 to 10 inches of snow, accompanied by flash-freeze conditions as rain quickly changes to snow Thursday evening.
Surrounding regions, including Livingston, Red Lodge, and the Beartooth Foothills, remain under Winter Weather Advisories through Friday morning, with 1 to 3 inches of snow and sharply colder temperatures. The Bighorn and Sheridan foothills could receive 2 to 5 inches, with localized blowing snow expected near mountain passes.
According to the NWS, “Travel will be difficult with slick, snow-covered roads and reduced visibility.” Drivers are urged to slow down and plan for delays, especially along Interstate 90 near Sheridan and routes through the Beartooth and Bighorn foothills.
Motorists should carry winter emergency kits and check road updates by calling 5-1-1 or visiting 511mt.net. Temperatures are expected to plummet overnight, creating dangerous conditions for anyone caught on the roads.
