Wolf Point, Montana – Life-threatening Arctic cold continues to dominate northeast Montana, keeping residents under dangerous conditions as brutal wind chills persist well below zero into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. MST Sunday for Daniels, Sheridan, Roosevelt, and northern Valley counties. Wind chills have fallen as low as 45 below zero, cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

Communities including Wolf Point, Plentywood, Scobey, Poplar, Culbertson, Medicine Lake, and Opheim remain at high risk as the prolonged cold stretches into a second day. Rural areas face added concerns due to longer travel distances and limited access to warming shelters if vehicles fail. The extended freeze is also increasing the threat of ruptured water pipes and mechanical issues with vehicles and farm equipment.

Emergency managers urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, dress in multiple layers, and fully cover exposed skin if outdoor activity is unavoidable. Homeowners are advised to allow faucets to drip and protect exposed plumbing. Pets should remain indoors, while livestock must have access to warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.

The extreme cold is expected to slowly ease Sunday afternoon, but officials caution that temperatures will remain well below seasonal norms. Additional cold-related alerts could be issued if Arctic air lingers into early next week.
