Great Falls, Montana – Wind gusts nearing 100 mph along the Rocky Mountain Front could snap power lines and make travel dangerous through Friday morning, with the strongest blasts targeting communities from Browning to Cut Bank.

According to the National Weather Service in Great Falls, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. MST Friday for much of north central and central Montana. West winds of 35 to 55 mph are sweeping the Rocky Mountain Front, with gusts up to 85 mph and isolated gusts near 100 mph expected along the immediate east slopes of the Rockies through early Thursday evening. Surrounding plains and valleys, including Great Falls and Helena, will see gusts up to 65 mph.

Communities under the warning include East Glacier Park, Choteau, Browning, Cut Bank, Shelby, Havre, Great Falls and Helena. Passes such as Marias Pass, Rogers Pass and MacDonald Pass could see sudden crosswinds capable of pushing high-profile vehicles across lanes.

Loose debris may become airborne, and scattered power outages are possible, especially along the foothills and open plains. Residents should secure outdoor furniture, trash bins and equipment immediately.

Strong winds will continue overnight and gradually ease late Friday morning, but additional advisories could follow if gusts remain elevated.
