Billings, MT – Strong winds are forecast to develop tonight and persist into Sunday, Oct. 19, across the western Montana foothills, prompting travel advisories from the National Weather Service in Billings. According to the agency, difficult to locally dangerous crosswinds will impact drivers along I-90 and US-191, especially near Livingston, Big Timber, and Nye.
The strongest winds are expected overnight in red-shaded areas on the NWS map—from midnight to 10 a.m. Sunday—where gusts could exceed 60 mph. In yellow-shaded zones, including Harlowton and Big Timber, winds are expected to peak between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Motorists in high-profile vehicles are urged to use caution or delay travel, as hazardous driving conditions may develop rapidly. NWS forecasters report an 80% chance of 60+ mph gusts near Livingston, 40% near Big Timber, and 30% around Harlowton.
The weather service advises all travelers to plan alternate routes or postpone trips through the I-90 corridor until conditions improve late Sunday.
