Red Lodge, Montana – Roads across the Beartooth and Red Lodge foothills could turn slick within hours this evening as rain quickly changes to snow and temperatures drop below freezing.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Monday until 9 a.m. Tuesday for the Beartooth and Red Lodge foothills, including communities like Red Lodge, Nye, Fishtail, and Roberts. Snowfall totals between 2 and 6 inches are expected, with the heaviest accumulation closer to the Beartooth Mountains.

Conditions will deteriorate rapidly this evening as wet roads freeze and snowfall intensifies. Travel along US-212 near Red Lodge is expected to become hazardous, with reduced visibility and snow-covered pavement developing during the evening hours.

In areas like McLeod and Roscoe, precipitation may begin as rain late Monday afternoon before switching to wet snow by early evening, increasing the risk of icy surfaces during the transition. Overnight, untreated roads and bridges will likely remain slick through the early morning commute.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check Montana road conditions by calling 511 before traveling. Avoiding non-essential trips tonight is recommended as visibility drops.

The advisory remains in effect through Tuesday morning, and additional updates may follow if snowfall intensifies.
