Billings, Montana – Snow-covered roads and slushy travel conditions are creating problems for drivers across central and south-central Montana this morning, with the heaviest snowfall already impacting the Monday commute and lingering into the early afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect until 2 p.m. Monday for Northern Stillwater, Northern Sweet Grass, Musselshell, Golden Valley, Judith Gap, Melville Foothills, and Southern Wheatland counties. Snow totals range from 2 to 5 inches in Northern Stillwater and Northern Sweet Grass counties, with 3 to 6 inches expected across Musselshell and Golden Valley counties and surrounding foothills.
The most persistent snowfall is falling along and north of the county line from Melville to Rapelje, where roads are becoming slushy and slick. Travel impacts are being reported near Park City, Big Timber, Columbus, Roundup, Harlowton, and Ryegate, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads. Portions of I-90 and U.S. Highway 12 may see reduced traction through the late morning hours.
Montana Department of Transportation crews are treating major routes, but drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden braking. Checking road conditions through 5-1-1 is strongly advised before traveling.
Snow tapers early this afternoon, though slick spots may persist beyond 2 p.m. Warnings remain in effect, and additional updates will be issued if conditions worsen.
