West Glacier, MT – The National Weather Service in Missoula has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the West Glacier Region, including Glacier National Park, Essex, Polebridge, and Marias Pass, from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon, warning of heavy snow and a possible flash freeze that could create major travel disruptions.

Forecasters say total snow accumulations could reach 3 to 8 inches in the valleys and 6 to 12 inches over Marias Pass and higher terrain. Winds will increase as the storm develops, potentially reducing visibility to below a quarter mile at times.

A sharp drop in temperatures Thursday night into Friday morning may trigger a flash freeze, turning wet roads icy just as heavier snow begins to fall. The Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes could be particularly treacherous, with dangerous or even impossible travel conditions over mountain passes.

Residents and travelers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and monitor forecast updates. If driving is unavoidable, the NWS recommends carrying a winter emergency kit, including chains, blankets, food, water, and a flashlight.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Friday as snowfall tapers and temperatures stabilize heading into the weekend.
