GLASGOW, Mont. – The wind is howling across Fort Peck Lake this morning, kicking up waves as high as six feet and sending sprays of mist into the gray dawn. Strong northwest gusts—some reaching 50 mph—continue to sweep across northeast Montana, where a Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect through 8 a.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, the combination of gusty winds and light snow is making for rough lake conditions and reduced visibility in open areas, particularly near Fort Peck, Saco, and Jordan. Small craft should remain docked through early morning hours as waves and crosswinds pose a risk of capsizing. Inland, rural drivers may encounter patches of blowing snow or slick roads, especially on U.S. Highway 2 and local gravel routes leading toward Valley and McCone Counties.

The system will ease later today as clouds begin to break. Highs will reach the upper 30s with calmer winds by afternoon, ushering in a much quieter Sunday with sunshine returning and milder temperatures climbing into the low 40s. Monday marks the start of a brief warming trend that continues through Veterans Day, with highs pushing into the 50s before another cold front approaches midweek.

Residents should use caution this morning, secure loose outdoor items, and allow extra time for travel in open country. For now, winter’s edge lingers across Montana’s high plains—a reminder that November’s cold season is setting in, even as calmer, clearer skies return by Monday.
