Glasgow, Montana – Dangerous boating conditions will develop on Fort Peck Lake by early Friday evening, with strong winds building waves up to 4 feet and creating immediate areas for anyone on the water.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, a Lake Wind Advisory goes into effect at 6 p.m. Friday and continues through 7 a.m. Saturday. Southeast winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. These areas will generate rough water, especially near the Duck Creek Recreation Area.

The combination of strong winds and cold water temperatures, hovering between 34 and 35 degrees, significantly increases the risk of hypothermia if boaters capsize. Even experienced boaters could struggle with wave action and sudden gusts, particularly in open water sections of the lake.

Officials urge residents and visitors to avoid boating during the advisory period or use extreme caution. Life jackets are strongly recommended, and smaller watercraft should remain off the lake until conditions improve.

Winds are expected to ease after sunrise Saturday, but additional advisories could be issued if gusty conditions persist.
