Billings, Montana – Drivers crossing the Bighorn Mountains face near-whiteout conditions and wind gusts up to 60 mph through Wednesday afternoon, creating hazardous travel along US-14 and higher elevations in southern Montana and north-central Wyoming.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. MST Wednesday for the Pryor and Northern Bighorn Mountains in Montana and the Northeast Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming. Periods of snow will bring total accumulations between 5 and 12 inches, with the heaviest snow falling in higher elevations near Story and Burgess Junction.

Strong winds will whip falling and existing snow across exposed ridges and mountain passes, sharply reducing visibility at times. Travel on US-14 through the Bighorns will become difficult, especially on open stretches where crosswinds can push vehicles and create drifting snow. Icy patches may develop quickly as temperatures remain cold.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary mountain travel during peak snowfall. Anyone planning to cross the Bighorns should check Wyoming and Montana 511 road reports before departure and carry winter survival gear, including blankets, food, and a charged phone.

Snow and strong winds will persist through Wednesday afternoon, and additional advisories could be issued if bands intensify or linger beyond the current timeline.
