Missoula, MT – The National Weather Service in Missoula has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the West Glacier Region, warning of heavy snow, strong winds, and the potential for a flash freeze from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon.

Forecasters say 3 to 8 inches of snow are possible in the valleys, while Marias Pass and higher terrain could see 6 to 12 inches. Areas under the watch include Glacier National Park, Essex, Polebridge, Bad Rock Canyon, and Highway 83 from Bigfork to Swan Lake.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm could cause major winter travel impacts with visibilities dropping below one-quarter mile during periods of heavy snow and blowing snow. Roads, bridges, and overpasses will likely become slick or impassable by Thursday night.

Meteorologists warn of an elevated flash freeze risk late Thursday into Friday morning, as temperatures rapidly drop from the 30s to below freezing while snow continues to fall. This sudden change could lead to ice formation on untreated roads, making travel extremely hazardous for Thanksgiving travelers and early Friday commuters.

Officials urge residents and visitors to monitor updated forecasts and avoid nonessential travel during the storm. Those who must drive should carry a winter survival kit, including tire chains, blankets, water, and emergency supplies.

The system marks one of the most impactful early-winter storms so far this season for northwest Montana, arriving just as holiday travel peaks across the region.
