Billings, Mont. – Strong thunderstorms capable of dropping ping-pong-sized hail and dumping heavy rain are expected to strike parts of Montana this afternoon, with the greatest risk concentrated from noon to 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, scattered severe storms are possible across southern and southeastern Montana, especially in and around Billings, Livingston, Sheridan, and Alzada. The storm zone has shifted slightly south compared to Sunday, putting more of the foothills at risk.

Primary hazards include damaging winds up to 60 mph, localized flooding, and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter. Residents planning outdoor activities or travel should stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Drivers along I-90 and U.S. 212 should expect sudden downpours and reduced visibility.

Communities in Yellowstone, Carter, Big Horn, and Powder River counties should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Secure loose items outside, stay indoors during thunder, and avoid flooded roadways.

The threat is expected to diminish by late evening, but additional rounds of storms are possible later this week. Stay tuned for updates as conditions evolve.
