Billings, Mont. – Strong thunderstorms are set to move across Montana Sunday afternoon, bringing the threat of large hail, damaging wind gusts, and heavy rain until late tonight. The greatest risk for severe storms will stretch from Billings northeast toward Miles City and Glendive, with activity peaking between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a few storms may become severe, producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters. Forecasters caution that heavy downpours could also create localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and near creeks or small rivers.
Drivers along I-90 from Livingston through Billings should be alert for rapidly changing conditions, while residents in eastern Montana towns such as Glendive, Miles City, and Forsyth are urged to move outdoor activities inside by midafternoon. Outdoor events and travel plans may be disrupted if stronger storms track through populated areas.
Officials recommend staying indoors during thunderstorms, keeping cell phones charged in case of outages, and reviewing severe weather warnings throughout the evening.
The storm threat is expected to diminish by late tonight, though additional weather advisories may follow if new storm systems develop early in the week.
