Billings, Montana – Residents across eastern Montana are bracing for severe thunderstorms through late Thursday night as a watch stretches across 17 counties, including Billings, Miles City, and Glendive. Heavy rain, hail up to an inch, and damaging wind gusts could cause dangerous driving conditions and scattered power outages until 11 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Yellowstone, Big Horn, Roosevelt, Custer, and surrounding counties. Officials warn drivers to stay off rural highways like US-212 and I-94 when storms approach, as low visibility and wind-blown debris could make travel treacherous.

Localized flooding is possible in low-lying neighborhoods, and wind gusts over 60 mph could down trees and snap power lines. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and move vehicles into garages or under sturdy shelter. Emergency managers remind everyone to avoid flooded roadways and report storm damage when safe.

Storms are expected to weaken overnight, but another round of showers and possible thunderstorms could return by Friday afternoon. The National Weather Service may issue new advisories if severe conditions persist.
