Billings, Montana – Yellowstone County residents could see 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail through Friday evening as a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. MDT.
According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 411 includes 27 Montana counties and parts of north-central Wyoming, including Sheridan County. The strongest storms are expected to develop along the I-90 and U.S. 87 corridors by late afternoon, with the potential for isolated tornadoes and frequent lightning.
Communities including Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, and Miles City are under threat as storm cells move eastward. Montana Department of Transportation officials urge drivers to remain alert for sudden visibility drops and flooded roadways. Power outages are possible, especially in rural areas with limited grid redundancy. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid non-essential travel until storms pass.
This is the region’s most widespread severe weather alert so far this June, following an unusually quiet start to the summer storm season. Areas like Rosebud, Cascade, and Custer counties may experience multiple storm waves through the evening.
Storm warnings may follow if conditions intensify. Residents should stay tuned to NOAA weather radio or local alerts for updates through the night.
