Billings, MT – Heavy snow and strong winds have created hazardous driving conditions across southeastern Montana, leading to road closures and travel warnings. US Hwy 212 is closed from I-90 to the Wyoming state line, as snow piles up and visibility remains poor.

According to the Rosebud County Sheriff’s Office, some drivers were ticketed for failing to use proper tire chains, as the storm is expected to worsen throughout Sunday night into Monday morning. Travelers are urged to avoid the area and stay updated through Montana’s 511 system for real-time road conditions.

The National Weather Service in Billings reports continued snow showers overnight with lows around 24°F. Snowfall is expected to taper off Monday morning, but icy conditions and subzero wind chills will persist. Travelers should carry emergency supplies and allow extra travel time if venturing out.

Looking ahead, the five-day forecast for Billings suggests slight improvements by midweek. Monday brings a 20% chance of snow with a high near 35°F, while Tuesday and Wednesday promise sunny skies and highs near 40°F. However, overnight lows will drop into the 20s, keeping roads icy in the early mornings.

Authorities recommend residents monitor forecasts closely and delay non-essential travel until conditions improve. Those commuting should drive cautiously, as refreezing overnight could create dangerous patches even on plowed roads.
