Glasgow, Montana – Boaters on Fort Peck Lake should brace for dangerous conditions Friday, as strong winds and choppy waters could overturn small craft during a 10-hour lake wind advisory.
According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, a Lake Wind Advisory will remain in effect from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. MDT Friday for central and southeast Phillips, Valley, Petroleum, Garfield, and McCone counties. Northwest winds are expected to blow at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph near the lake.
Communities including Glasgow, Jordan, Malta, Frazer, and Winnett could experience hazardous lake conditions, particularly around Fort Peck Lake. The strongest gusts are forecast in the afternoon, creating rough waves and limited maneuverability for small boats. Visibility could also be reduced in areas of patchy smoke.
The National Weather Service advises boaters to use extreme caution, wear life jackets, and avoid venturing out in lightweight or poorly equipped vessels. Similar wind advisories have led to capsized boats in previous years.
Winds are expected to subside Friday night, but anyone planning to be on the water should monitor for updates or additional advisories throughout the day.
