Glasgow, Mont. – Strong northwest winds are expected to whip across Fort Peck Lake today, posing a hazard to small watercraft as gusts climb to 35 mph and wave heights reach up to 4 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday for Central and Southeast Phillips, Valley, Petroleum, Garfield, and McCone counties. Winds between 15 to 25 mph, with peak gusts around 35 mph, will develop by late morning and continue through the early evening hours.
Boaters near Saco, Malta, Jordan, Circle, and Glasgow should expect rough lake conditions, especially on open water. The National Weather Service warns that such waves could easily overturn smaller vessels. Extra caution is advised for anyone navigating Fort Peck Lake during the advisory period.
Residents are encouraged to delay recreational boating and ensure all equipment is secured. This is the first Lake Wind Advisory of the season for the area.
The advisory will expire at 7 p.m. MDT, but officials caution that wind-related hazards could linger into the evening. Updates will be issued if conditions worsen.
