Choteau, MT – A High Wind Warning is in effect from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday for areas along the Rocky Mountain Front and adjacent plains, where gusts up to 90 mph are expected, according to the National Weather Service in Great Falls.

The strongest winds are forecast across northern and southern high plains counties, including Choteau, Browning, Bynum, Cut Bank, and Dupuyer, with sustained west winds of 40 to 50 mph. The NWS warns that damaging gusts could lead to downed trees, power outages, and hazardous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles on open highways.

Residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions throughout Wednesday. Officials recommend securing outdoor items, avoiding unnecessary travel, and remaining indoors during peak wind periods.

Forecasters note that these extreme winds are common in the region during strong mountain downslope events and can create dangerous crosswinds on roads including U.S. Highway 89 and U.S. Highway 2.
