Great Falls, MT – Travelers in northern Montana should prepare for hazardous conditions as a high wind watch goes into effect Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning. Gusts up to 75 mph are expected, especially along the Highway 2 corridor and near the Rocky Mountain Front.
According to the National Weather Service, west winds of 30-40 mph will intensify Monday evening, creating dangerous travel conditions. Blowing and drifting snow may reduce visibility, especially in open areas, and slippery roadways are possible. High-profile vehicles are at particular risk due to strong crosswinds.
The hazardous weather is part of a broader forecast that includes variable conditions throughout the week. After a mostly sunny Sunday with highs near 19°F, patchy fog and calm winds are expected Sunday night, with lows around 6°F. Monday will see temperatures rise to 39°F under sunny skies before winds pick up late in the day.
The strongest gusts are predicted overnight Monday into early Tuesday, gradually easing by midday Tuesday. Tuesday’s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with a high near 48°F and calmer southwest winds of 13-16 mph.
The weather stabilizes midweek, with mostly sunny conditions continuing Wednesday and highs around 41°F. Overnight lows will remain chilly, dropping to the low 20s. Thursday and Friday will see milder weather, with highs reaching 47°F and 51°F respectively, accompanied by light winds and partly cloudy skies.
Residents are urged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and secure outdoor items that could become airborne in high winds. Travelers should check road conditions before heading out and consider postponing trips during the wind event.
