Billings, MT – As Montanans jump into Cyber Monday deals today, state officials are warning Billings shoppers to stay alert as Christmas-season online scams spike across the region. Cybersecurity analysts say 2025 could bring one of the biggest waves of digital fraud Montana has ever seen.
According to the Montana Department of Justice’s Office of Consumer Protection, scammers are rolling out fake retail websites, misleading discount codes, and Christmas-themed phishing emails made to look like trusted brands such as Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and even well-known Northwest retailers. Officials warn that these scams often intensify in rural and mid-sized markets where shoppers rely heavily on online holiday shopping.
One of the fastest-growing threats is copycat retail websites. These fraudulent pages closely mimic legitimate online stores and promote massive “Holiday Mega Deals” offering 70–90% off electronics, toys, and Christmas gifts. Once shoppers enter their payment information, scammers steal financial data or vanish entirely.
Billings residents are also reporting an uptick in package-delivery text scams. These messages impersonate UPS, USPS, or FedEx and claim a package is delayed or missing address information. Clicking the link can install malware or expose personal and banking details.
Cybersecurity experts recommend several steps to stay safe today:
• Shop only through verified retailer websites or official store apps
• Avoid clicking tracking links sent via text or unexpected email
• Double-check URLs for misspellings or unusual characters
• Use credit cards instead of debit for stronger fraud protection
• Treat extremely cheap holiday deals with caution
With Christmas fast approaching, Montana families are encouraged to enjoy the excitement of holiday shopping—while staying vigilant online.
