Bozeman, MT – The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center and Flathead Avalanche Center have issued Backcountry Avalanche Warnings for multiple regions of western and southern Montana, citing very dangerous avalanche conditions expected through Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
The warnings cover areas near Cooke City, as well as the Whitefish, Swan, and Flathead Ranges, including parts of Glacier National Park, Lake McDonald Valley, and Marias Pass.
Officials say that recent heavy snow, high winds, and warm temperatures have created unstable snowpack conditions, with large natural avalanches likely. In the Cooke City area, avalanches have already occurred over the past four days, and forecasters expect many more slides today.
Travelers and backcountry users are urged to avoid all steep terrain, as slides may be triggered even from flat or low-lying areas below avalanche paths. Avalanches could run long distances, reaching valley floors and forested terrain.
The avalanche danger will remain HIGH through early Wednesday. Outdoor enthusiasts are strongly advised to check local avalanche forecasts before venturing into mountain areas.
