Monroe, MI – A Detroit man was critically injured early Monday after a serious crash involving an SUV and a semi-truck on northbound I-75 near Sigler Road in Berlin Township.
According to the Monroe County Sheriffโs Office, the crash happened Monday at about 5:09 a.m. when a 39-year-old Detroit man driving a 2015 Honda Pilot came to a complete stop in the right lane of traffic for unknown reasons. Authorities say a 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer, operated by a 49-year-old Toledo, Ohio man, struck the SUV from behind.
Investigators said the impact caused the Honda to leave the roadway to the east, where it came to rest on the shoulder facing southwest. The semi reportedly jackknifed, leaving the freeway to the north and coming to rest against the median guardrail, also facing southwest.
Officials said the Detroit driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and the vehicleโs airbags did not deploy. The semi driver was wearing a seat belt, and his truck was not equipped with airbags.
The injured Detroit man was transported to Corewell Health Trenton Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. The semi driver was also taken to the same hospital and is reported to be in serious condition. Authorities are withholding the name of the Detroit man pending notification of next of kin.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, officials said.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including Berlin Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, Michigan State Police, and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Monroe County Sheriffโs Office or Crime Stoppers.
