Monroe, MI – A 15-year-old boy led police on a high-speed chase through Monroe and Frenchtown Township Sunday night, authorities reported. The pursuit began around 8 p.m. when an attempted traffic stop escalated.
According to Sheriff Troy Goodnough, Lieutenant Jeffrey Ellington initiated a traffic stop on E. Third Street, east of S. Monroe Street. The driver fled at speeds over 60 mph, forcing the initial pursuit to end for safety reasons. Moments later, Monroe Public Safety officers spotted the vehicle on Winchester Street near E. Elm Street. Deputy Jacob Llewellyn joined the pursuit, which extended onto northbound Interstate 75 from N. Dixie Highway.
The fleeing vehicle later returned to the City of Monroe and stopped at a private driveway on Navarre Street. Officers arrested the driver without further incident. No injuries or property damage occurred during the chase.
Authorities confirmed the driver was a 15-year-old male and lodged him at the Monroe County Youth Center. He faces charges of fleeing and eluding police. A 13-year-old passenger, also in the vehicle, was released to their family without charges.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office commended officers for ending the pursuit safely. Sheriff Goodnough emphasized the importance of ensuring public safety during such high-risk incidents.
Police have not released the name of the juvenile driver. The investigation remains ongoing.
