Monroe, MI – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a phone scam circulating as Labor Day weekend approaches. Sheriff Troy Goodnough reported Thursday that the scam involves callers impersonating members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. These scammers falsely claim that the recipient has missed a court date, leading to an alleged bench warrant with a $45,000 bond.
According to the sheriff, this scam has targeted several residents, creating unnecessary fear and confusion. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that they never contact citizens by phone or social media regarding missed court dates. If you receive such a call, authorities urge you to hang up immediately and avoid sharing any personal or financial information.
As the long weekend nears, scammers are taking advantage of the holiday rush, hoping residents might be distracted. Sheriff Goodnough advises everyone to stay vigilant and report any suspicious calls to Monroe County Central Dispatch at (734) 243-7070.
With Labor Day just days away, Monroe County residents are encouraged to enjoy the holiday safely by being aware of potential scams and protecting their personal information.
