Monroe, MI –
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a telephone scam targeting community members through fake law enforcement calls, Sheriff Troy Goodnough announced Friday evening.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the scam involves an unknown caller pretending to be a deputy — using the name “Deputy Corey Jacobs” — and falsely claiming the victim has failed to appear for jury duty or has an outstanding warrant. The caller then threatens arrest unless payment is made immediately, often demanding bitcoin or electronic gift cards.

Sheriff Goodnough said the scheme aims to create panic and pressure victims into sending money. “Scammers sound urgent to make people act before they think,” he warned.

Residents are urged to remember that law enforcement will never call demanding payment or threaten arrest over the phone. Instead, authorities advise residents to stop and verify any suspicious calls, contact a trusted person or local police for advice, and never send funds or personal information to unsolicited callers.

Anyone in Monroe County who receives such a call is asked to report it to Monroe County Central Dispatch at (734) 243-7070. Citizens outside the county should contact their local law enforcement agency.
