Monroe County, NY – A welfare check in Pittsford Tuesday afternoon led to the arrest of a convicted felon after deputies say they discovered a loaded ghost gun and ammunition hidden inside a home.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a residence on December 9 at approximately 2:12 p.m. to check on the welfare of Cameron Sanderson. When deputies arrived, they located Sanderson inside the home allegedly inhaling “duster,” a compressed air product. Deputies detained Sanderson for his safety while emergency medical services entered the home to provide treatment.
During the initial investigation, deputies observed a single round of live rifle ammunition on the floor. Investigators noted that Sanderson is a convicted felon, making it illegal for him to possess firearms or ammunition under New York law.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence. While executing the warrant, deputies located a Polymer 80 semi-automatic handgun loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition in an attached magazine. The firearm was discovered inside a hidden compartment in a bedroom.
Authorities identified the weapon as a ghost gun — an unregistered and untraceable firearm that typically lacks a serial number and is often assembled using 3D-printed components. Investigators also found additional magazines and multiple rounds of ammunition inside the home.
The Sheriff’s Office stated that Sanderson has two prior felony convictions and 16 misdemeanor convictions, including offenses involving firearms possession.
Cameron S. Sanderson, 54, of Pittsford, is charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C felony, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, a Class D felony.
Following his arrest, Sanderson was arraigned in Monroe County CAP Court. Bail was set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond. On December 16, Sanderson posted bail and was released pending trial with an electronic ankle monitor as a condition of release.
