Monroe County, NY – Deputies say more than 100 vehicles were illegally entered or damaged during an overnight larceny spree that stretched across Pittsford, Perinton, and Penfield early Thursday. The string of break-ins began around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday when a Pittsford resident reported her vehicle stolen from her Rand Place driveway.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, additional reports quickly surfaced across Perinton and Penfield—particularly between Route 441 and Whitney Road, west of Route 250—where residents found broken windows, damaged door handles, and missing property.
While investigating one of the calls on High Street, a Fairport Police officer spotted a gold Kia Sportage near the areas of reported larcenies. Police say the driver refused to stop, prompting a pursuit through Perinton. Deputies later learned the Kia was also stolen. The chase ended when the SUV crashed near Green Ridge and Green Valley Roads, and five occupants allegedly ran into nearby woods.
Deputies, K9 units, drones, and a New York State Police helicopter were called in, partly due to a loaded stolen handgun believed to be inside one of the targeted vehicles. After hours of searching in freezing temperatures, all five suspects were located, and the handgun was recovered.
MCSO says the widespread damage has disrupted morning commutes, cost many residents time away from work or school, and will result in significant repair and insurance expenses. Sheriff Todd Baxter called the response “outstanding police work,” while urging stronger laws for vehicle pursuits.
Three suspects—Dayshaun Wilson, 19; Xavion S. Goolsby, 18; and a 16-year-old juvenile—face felony stolen property and weapon charges. A 15-year-old juvenile faces one felony count. A 17-year-old juvenile was not charged. Additional charges are expected.
