Monroe County, NY – A Brighton man previously banned from St. John Fisher University was arrested again this week after allegedly returning to the campus, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say Shalom J. Mathews, 20, a former student, violated an order of protection that prohibited him from entering university grounds. The order was issued in 2024 after Mathews was arrested for an attempted knife attack against a staff member that year.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, St. John Fisher security alerted deputies on October 28, 2025, after spotting Mathews’ vehicle on campus. A joint investigation confirmed he had entered the property on October 24, in violation of court orders.
Mathews, who remains on probation from the 2024 case, was taken into custody and charged with criminal contempt in the second degree and trespass. He was arraigned on October 29 in Monroe County CAP Court and released on his own recognizance, with a follow-up court appearance set for November 13.
Sheriff Todd K. Baxter described Mathews as a “repeat offender with a history of dangerous behavior,” calling the incident an example of why a “dangerousness standard” could help prevent similar re-offenses.
University officials thanked campus security for assisting deputies during the arrest and confirmed that Mathews remains permanently banned from the campus.
