Monroe, Michigan – Monroe County officials are launching a senior check-in pilot to improve safety.

Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough, in partnership with the Monroe County Commission on Aging and the county’s RSVP program, announced Thursday the launch of a volunteer pilot program aimed at supporting vulnerable and homebound seniors.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the initiative will use the ConfirmOK system, which allows participants to establish personalized daily check-in schedules. If a participant misses three consecutive check-ins, caregivers are alerted through automated texts or emails. An automated call is then placed to Central Dispatch to initiate a wellness check if needed.

Officials said participants who require assistance are instructed to call 911. If they are unable to do so, they can press “3” during the automated call to be transferred to a non-emergency number at Central Dispatch.

The service will be offered free of charge during the pilot phase.

Project timelines released by the Sheriff’s Office show outreach to recruit 30 to 40 volunteers began February 13. Selected volunteers will be contacted March 2 to provide detailed information for system setup. The pilot officially begins at 7 a.m. March 16 and is scheduled to conclude at 7 a.m. May 11.

Following the conclusion, Sheriff Goodnough, Sheriff Jason Berry and department members will evaluate results to determine long-term viability. If successful, officials plan to seek alternative funding to sustain the program.

The system may be particularly relevant for college students or young adults living away from family who want structured wellness monitoring.
