According to the sheriff’s office, Monroe County Central Emergency Dispatch received multiple 911 calls around 2:39 a.m. Sunday reporting a possible house fire with occupants trapped inside at a home in the 3800 block of East Anderson Road, east of Bloomington.
Deputies and Monroe County Fire Protection District crews arrived to find a vehicle embedded in the attached garage of the residence, which was actively burning. One individual had escaped the home and was suffering from severe burns. A second individual on scene provided deputies with information about the incident. Both were transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and later transferred to a hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment.
While assisting fire crews, deputies confirmed that two remaining occupants of the residence had died from injuries sustained in the fire.
Investigators also began searching for an individual suspected of starting the fire. With assistance from the Bloomington Police Department and Indiana State Police, a person of interest was located approximately one hour later in a wooded area near the property. That individual was also suffering from burn injuries and was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital before being transferred to Indianapolis for treatment. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.
The Monroe County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the deceased at a later time.
