Reno, NV – A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for Mono County beginning at 1 p.m. this afternoon and lasting through 4 p.m. Friday, with forecasters warning of heavy wet snow and powerful winds across the Eastern Sierra’s highest elevations.

According to the National Weather Service, elevations above 9,000 feet may see 9–12 inches of snow, with areas just below that threshold receiving up to 4 inches. The strongest snowfall is expected near Mt. Lyell, where accumulations could exceed 2 feet. The storm’s winds are also a major concern, with gusts expected to reach 70 mph along the highest peaks and 40–50 mph in elevations below 8,000 feet.

Communities affected include Coleville, Bridgeport, Lee Vining, and Mammoth Lakes, where travel conditions may deteriorate quickly late this afternoon and evening. The combination of heavy, wet snow and strong winds could lead to tree or limb damage, and isolated power disruptions are possible.

Forecasters warn the hazardous conditions could impact both the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes, especially for travelers heading over Sierra passes or into backcountry areas. Drivers are urged to carry emergency supplies such as extra food, water, blankets, and a flashlight, and to check Caltrans 511 for the latest road conditions.

Officials urge delaying travel into high elevations when possible. If travel cannot be postponed, motorists should expect rapidly changing conditions, blowing snow, and slick roadways.
