Moncks Corner, SC – A routine traffic stop in Berkeley County escalated into a high-speed pursuit and multiple felony charges after deputies allegedly recovered drugs and a firearm from a suspect late Sunday night.

According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted to stop a white 2007 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck traveling along North Highway 52 near Horne Street for a vehicle license violation. Investigators say the driver, later identified as 39-year-old Thomas Palmer of Lightning Road in Bonneau, failed to stop and fled the area.

Sheriff Duane Lewis said the pursuit continued through several roadways and parking lots, including Epson Plantation Drive, Rembert C. Dennis Boulevard, Old Highway 52, and Shannondrive Drive, with speeds reaching approximately 78 miles per hour. Deputies ultimately deployed stop sticks twice, bringing the vehicle to a stop in the Shannonwood neighborhood.

During a probable cause search, deputies allegedly found multiple controlled substances on Palmer, including methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana, along with narcotics paraphernalia and a torch-style lighter. A subsequent search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered a loaded 12-gauge shotgun with a drum magazine and a digital scale containing suspected drug residue.

Authorities say deputies recovered approximately 12.80 grams of methamphetamine, 0.40 grams of cocaine, and 2.70 grams of marijuana, which was allegedly laced with fentanyl.

Palmer was charged with failure to stop for blue lights, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, trafficking methamphetamine, manufacturing cocaine, possession of cocaine, and possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person convicted of a violent felony, among other charges. All charges are allegations.

Palmer was transported to the Hill-Finklea Detention Center, where he is awaiting a bond hearing. The investigation remains ongoing.
