Momence, IL – The Momence Fire Protection District, serving Kankakee County, is seeking a tax increase to improve emergency response services. The proposal, on the April 1 ballot, aims to fund full-time staffing and upgrade EMS capabilities.

Currently, the department operates with 31 volunteer firefighters who respond to emergencies from home. Limited availability, especially during the day, affects response times. Increased funding would allow for 24/7 staffing and the purchase of two ambulances, ensuring better service for the community.

The district’s operating budget relies on property taxes at a rate of 0.261%, generating $434,147 annually. The proposed increase would raise the rate to 0.401%, adding about $229 per year for a home valued at $57,327.

According to officials, this is the first requested increase since 1985. The additional funding would raise the district’s annual budget to approximately $1.1 million, improving service levels.

Residents can learn more at fire station meetings every Saturday at 8 a.m. and Wednesday at 6 p.m. For questions, email support@momencefire.net. The fire district urges community support to ensure faster, more reliable emergency response.
